About 7 generations ago a Pinto Tobiano was crossed with a pure blood Arab. The Tobiano coat is a non-symetrical pattern with irregularly shaped large colored patches.
As the Tobiano gene is dominant, it has been possible to cross the piebald with a pure blood Arab (PBA) so to retain a two-colored horse with a greater proportion of Arab blood. This was the introduction of a new breed - rather than a new coat for an already known breed.

The Paintabian or Pintabian should not be confused with a SABINO pure blood Arab. Arab horses with a Sabino coat have different white marks: they do not extend to the back line. These are not Tobiano markings.
Neither is it a Pinto which is a term which merely describes it's color. However there is a Pinto Stud Book in the USA which defines it as an American breed which is not a Piebald.
Neither is it a Paint, which is a Quarter Horse with a piebald coat.
To differenciate a Paintabian or Pintabian from another piebald horse, one of the parents must have 100% pure  Arab blood and the other parent must be piebald or spotted with at least 98,4375% Arab blood.
.
A Paintabian or Pintabian can be registered with various authorities
* The IAHA (International Arabian Horse Association) as a half blood Arab. This Stud Book only registers horses where one parent is PBA and the other half blood.
* The PHA (Pinto Horse Association) based on the color of it's coat.
* The PHRI (Pintabian Horse Registry International)
* All part-Arab Stud Books.
It cannot be registered in the AHRA (The Arabian Horse Registry of America) or any other Stud Book which only registers pure Arab race horses. Bluntly, WAHO (The World Arabian Horse Organisation) which ferociously protects the exclusive purity of Arab blood, refuses to include in the PBA any horse from a strain which is not 100% Arab.

BUT....

Our Paintabians or Pintabians have a beautiful piebald coat AND all the characteristics and morphology of pure Arab blood.
These horses are fast, manageable, brave and resistant.
A pure blood Arab has a very fine coat and can on occasions be a bit ticklish...It is distinguished by it's silky hair and the style of it's members. It has an arched neck, a particularly expressive head and a concave profile. It's chest is wide and open, the back usually short and wide, the rump is high and generally horizontal. The high junction of the tail with the body and it's proud carriage is typical of the breed. It's legs are fine and solid, the upper legs long and straight. The head of the pure blood Arab is dry: bone structure is clearly shown and the veins can be seen beneath the skin. The wide forehead is crowned with two well pointed and beautifully formed ears.His mussel is short, frequently concave and rounded off by a fine nose with wide open nostrils.
Above all, these are horses with a definite character, but always affectionate and very intelligent.
